Quick Guide to How to Clean Black and Decker Coffee Maker in 5 Steps
A Black+Decker coffee maker that tastes bitter or brews slower than it used to almost always points to one thing: mineral buildup from tap water. The fix is a straightforward vinegar-and-water cleaning cycle, and most Black+Decker models are built to make this genuinely easy. Here are the 5 real steps, based on Black+Decker’s own AUTO CLEAN® process.
Do You Have an AUTO CLEAN® Model?
Many Black+Decker coffee makers include a dedicated AUTO CLEAN® button that runs the full descaling cycle automatically. If your model has this button, follow the 5 steps below as written. If it doesn’t, the same vinegar-and-water solution still works — you’ll just run it manually using the regular brew cycle instead, pausing partway through to let it soak.
5 Steps to Clean Your Black+Decker Coffee Maker
Step 1: Mix the Cleaning Solution
Combine 6 cups of white vinegar with 4 cups of cold water directly in the carafe. This ratio is Black+Decker’s own recommended mix for the AUTO CLEAN® cycle. If your model lacks AUTO CLEAN®, use equal parts vinegar and water instead.
Step 2: Pour the Solution Into the Reservoir
Pour the vinegar-water mixture into the water reservoir, not the carafe. Place a basket-style paper filter (8-to-12-cup size) into the removable filter basket, insert it into the holder, and close the cover.
Step 3: Set Up the Carafe and Power On
Make sure the carafe lid is in place and set the empty carafe on the warming plate. Plug the power cord into an outlet.
Step 4: Run the Cleaning Cycle
Press AUTO CLEAN® to start. The display will show “CLEAN” and the power light will illuminate while the cycle runs. On models without this button, start a normal brew cycle instead, then turn the machine off once the carafe is about half full and let the solution sit for roughly 30 minutes so the vinegar has time to break down mineral deposits before finishing the cycle.
Step 5: Rinse With Two Full Cycles of Plain Water
Empty the carafe, discard the used filter, and run two complete brew cycles with plain water and no coffee grounds. This clears out any remaining vinegar taste or smell before you brew coffee again.
How Often to Clean
Black+Decker recommends cleaning your coffee maker once a month under normal use. If you have hard water, mineral buildup happens faster, so cleaning every 2 to 3 weeks may keep the machine performing better between deep cleans.
FAQs
Can I use a descaling solution instead of vinegar?
Yes — a commercial coffee maker descaling solution works as an alternative to vinegar and can be gentler-smelling, though white vinegar remains the most widely documented and budget-friendly option.
My Black+Decker coffee maker doesn’t have an AUTO CLEAN® button — can I still descale it?
Yes — the manual method (equal parts vinegar and water, run through a normal brew cycle with a soak partway through) works on any model, with or without the dedicated button.
Why does my coffee still taste off after cleaning?
Run an extra plain-water rinse cycle — vinegar residue can linger if only one rinse cycle was run. Also check that the filter basket and carafe were thoroughly rinsed by hand.
Does hard water make cleaning more urgent?
Yes — hard water contains more dissolved minerals that build up faster inside the machine, so households with hard water should clean more frequently than the standard once-a-month recommendation.
